Relinquishing Control: Trusting God in Our Careers
One of the most challenging aspects of life to fully surrender to God is often our careers. We spend years shaping our professional paths, pursuing success, and making decisions to secure our future. Yet, when it comes to turning over control of this critical area to God, many of us hesitate. Fear creeps in—fear of change, fear of the unknown, and fear of inadequacy. Despite this, God calls us to submit every part of our lives to Him, including our careers, trusting that His plan is far greater than anything we could imagine.
The Bible is full of reminders to release our grip on control and trust in the Lord’s guidance. Proverbs 3:5-6 encourages us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” This doesn’t only apply to our spiritual lives—it encompasses our work as well. Submitting our careers to God requires a leap of faith, but the promise is clear: when we surrender, He leads us.
For many, fear is the biggest reason surrendering control is so difficult. We fear where God might lead us if we let go—what if He calls us to leave a stable job or pursue a path we feel unprepared for? Change is intimidating, and we worry that we may not be ready or equipped for what’s next. But, as God demonstrated through Moses, He never calls us without equipping us. Philippians 4:19 assures us: “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus.” Our readiness is not about our own abilities but about trusting His provision.
Surrendering your career to God doesn’t mean all the answers will come instantly, or that the journey will be free of challenges. But it does mean you’re no longer relying solely on your own strength and understanding. God is faithful, and His plans are for our good (Jeremiah 29:11). Where He leads, He walks beside us, giving us the tools and confidence to thrive in His purpose.
Practical Steps to Submit Your Career to God:
Pray for Guidance – Regularly seek God’s direction in your career decisions. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God… and it will be given to you.”
Align Your Work with God’s Purpose – Colossians 3:23 encourages us to work wholeheartedly, as for the Lord, making Him the ultimate focus of our efforts.
Trust in God’s Timing – Proverbs 16:9 reminds us that while we plan, it’s the Lord who directs our steps. Trust that He knows the best timing, even when things don’t go as planned.
Seek Godly Counsel – Proverbs 11:14 teaches that wise counsel brings safety. Surround yourself with trusted Christian mentors who can offer guidance.
Let Go of Control – Philippians 4:6-7 calls us to release anxiety and trust God. Letting go of control invites His peace into our career journey.
Pursue Excellence for God’s Glory – 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us to do everything for God’s glory. Work diligently, trusting that success is in His hands.
Be Open to Redirection – Be flexible, knowing that “Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails” (Proverbs 19:21). Trust God’s redirection.
In moments of doubt, remember: relinquishing control to God is not about losing power, but gaining peace. It’s about letting go of fear and embracing the truth that where He guides, He provides. Trust Him with your career, and you’ll find the fulfillment and direction only He can offer.
